Master's Degree in Environmental Hazard and Disaster Risk Management
Main Campus, Italy
Overview
The program is a continuation of the University's Master's Degree program in Environmental Sciences and Civil Protection (LM-32) and is also open to graduates from other degree programs who wish to deepen and expand their knowledge of these topics.
The program is open to all, subject to a prerequisite assessment and, if applicable, an interview to assess the candidate's suitability.
A distinctive feature of this program is its interdisciplinary approach to the study of natural processes, including extreme events and their impact on socioeconomic systems.
Students acquire specific skills in risk assessment (chemical and industrial risk, fire risk and prevention, geological, climatic, biological, and ecological risk) and civil protection, both in the forecasting, prevention, and mitigation of extreme natural events and in emergency planning and management (disaster risk reduction, GIS tools in environmental and civil protection, integrated emergency management, major emergency and disaster medicine), as well as in-depth study of environmental disciplines and issues (environmental legislation and monitoring, waste management and environmental remediation, nature conservation and management of protected areas, environmental certifications and regulations, environmental and energy sustainability).
The course is taught in English, so graduates in Environmental Risk and Civil Protection will be able to fully utilize technical and scientific English in the areas covered by the program.
This represents an important added value, given the need for Italian graduates working in the fields of Environmental Risk and Civil Protection to interact internationally with various stakeholders.
Laboratory and field exercises, other professional development activities in the fields of environmental monitoring, telecommunications techniques, remote sensing, firefighting techniques, and marine emergencies, as well as the master's thesis, complete the program, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to real or simulated situations.
Upon completion of the program, students receive a Master's Degree in Environmental Risk and Civil Protection.
This degree allows access to second-level master's programs, advanced training courses, and research doctorates.
Specifically, the Polytechnic University of Marche has offered a doctoral program in Sciences, with a focus on Civil and Environmental Protection, for several years. This represents a natural path for graduates who wish to pursue research and graduate studies. Possession of a master's degree in Environmental Risk and Civil Protection also allows access, subject to an exam and/or internship, to the professional registers (Presidential Decree 328/2001 and Ministerial Decree 386/2007, Annex 2) of biologists, geologists, territorial planners, agronomists, and forestry professionals.
