Bangor University (Welsh: Prifysgol Bangor) is a public research university located in the cathedral city of Bangor, Gwynedd, in North Wales. Founded in 1884 as the University College of North Wales, it was established through a remarkable public campaign to address the lack of higher education institutions in Wales, with local quarrymen and farmers contributing their wages to fund its creation.
Today the university organises its teaching and research across three academic colleges and ten academic schools, offering hundreds of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 85% of Bangor's research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, placing it among the top research institutions in Wales.
Situated on the North Wales coast between the mountains of Snowdonia (Eryri) and the Menai Strait, Bangor offers a unique setting that supports specialist research in environmental sciences, marine biology, and forestry. The university has received a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the only university in Wales to achieve this distinction.
