Program Overview: MRes in Drug Discovery and Development

The MRes in Drug Discovery and Development at Imperial College London is a one-year stand-alone research-intensive program that provides a deep understanding of the current global state of drug discovery and the future direction of the industry. You will enhance your knowledge of the drug discovery process, explore emerging technologies, and learn about drug target selection through teaching guided by leaders in the field.

The program is centered around a substantial 9-month interdisciplinary research project, complemented by taught courses covering elementary and advanced aspects of drug discovery techniques, specialist lectures in transferable skills, and group discussion sessions. You will develop your own ideas on how to focus research to meet the pressing challenges of drug discovery through Journal Club meetings and an extended research project.

Delivered by the Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, this MRes is based at Imperial's White City Campus. Research training takes place within a multidisciplinary environment, giving you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills required to work in the pharmaceutical industry or to pursue further doctoral research in drug discovery science.

Key Program Highlights

  • 9-month interdisciplinary research project forming the core of the program, with projects spanning synthetic medicinal chemistry and biological assessment of active compounds
  • Teaching guided by leaders in the drug discovery field, incorporating talks on clinical trials and the regulatory process
  • Access to Imperial's Centre for Drug Discovery Science (CDDS), which couples scientific innovation expertise with deep knowledge in disease biology and clinical need
  • Graduates receive the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) alongside the MRes degree, preparing them for PhD studies or industry careers

Curriculum and Research Modules

The MRes curriculum is research-focused, with the majority of the program weighting placed on the research component. Students are assessed through oral examinations, presentations, and a research manuscript, and are exposed to diverse teaching methods including lab work, computational work, departmental seminars, expert lectures, and practicals.

A 9-month interdisciplinary research project selected from proposals submitted by collaborating academic staff. Projects involve multidisciplinary scientific training in areas such as synthetic medicinal chemistry and biological assessment of active compounds.
