Mechatronic Engineering
Program Overview: BEng Mechatronic Engineering at Southampton
Mechatronic engineering combines electrical and mechanical engineering to find solutions for systems that rely on mechanical elements, electrical power, sensing and control. This three-year BEng programme at the University of Southampton prepares you to meet the increasing demand from industry for engineers with cross-disciplinary skills in robotics, flexible manufacturing, electromechanical power systems and electrical power transmission.
You will gain the skills to design intelligent machines, from electric vehicles to large-scale industrial robots. The program covers how to design systems that rely on mechanical elements, electrical power, sensing and control, and includes the latest research developments in fields such as energy harvesting, sensors and mechatronics in healthcare.
The BEng Mechatronic Engineering degree is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council. It fully meets the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meets the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
Key Program Highlights
- IET-accredited program meeting the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer registration with the Engineering Council
- Hands-on group project to design, build and evaluate an autonomous robot
- Access to fully equipped electronics labs and high-spec computer labs for practical work throughout the degree
- Flexible third year with a wide range of optional modules and an individual research project supervised by a leading academic
Curriculum and Modules
The program has been designed to maximise student choice by allowing you to tailor the degree structure to suit your interests. During the first two years, you undertake a series of core modules providing a grounding in essential topics, while in your third year you can choose from a wide range of specialist optional modules and complete an individual project.
Circuits and Electronic Systems
15 ECTSIntroduces the fundamentals of electronic circuits and systems, covering circuit analysis techniques, component characteristics and basic system design principles essential for mechatronic applications.
Programming and Digital Systems
15 ECTSCovers programming fundamentals and digital systems design, including writing programs for microcontrollers and building processing boards in the laboratory environment.
Fields, Forces and Materials
15 ECTSExplores the physics of electromagnetic fields, mechanical forces and engineering materials, providing the theoretical foundation for understanding how electromechanical systems operate.
Control and Communications
15 ECTSCovers mechatronics essentials including control systems theory, feedback mechanisms and communications protocols used in modern electromechanical and robotic systems.
Electrical Machines and Power Systems
15 ECTSStudies electrical machines, mechanical power transmission and power systems technology, equipping you with the knowledge to work with electromechanical power systems and distribution networks.
Individual Research Project
22.5 ECTSA major final-year project where you analyse a problem, design and implement a solution, and test your design. Projects typically involve experimental work or the development of a prototype system supervised by an expert in your chosen field.
