The BEng (Hons) Mechatronics and Robotic Systems at the University of Liverpool immerses you in technologies spanning mechanical, control and electrical engineering, electronics, and computing. The program covers applications ranging from driverless cars and automated manufacturing robots to remotely operated vehicles used in space exploration.

You will receive a thorough grounding in electrical and computer control systems alongside technologies in mechanical engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, control engineering, and computing. The curriculum is developed in close collaboration with industry leaders, ensuring you gain advanced skills with industry-standard tools, technologies, and working methods.

This program is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council, fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the requirement for Chartered Engineer status. Teaching takes place in the award-winning Sir Robin Saxby Laboratories, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for digital systems.

Curriculum and Modules

The program is taught over two semesters per year with examinations at the end of each semester. All programmes incorporate a substantial practical component, with an increasing emphasis on project work as you progress through to the final year. Assessment is carried out through a mixture of exams, coursework, and projects.

Engineering in Practice

A foundational module introducing practical engineering skills, laboratory techniques, and professional practices essential for mechatronics and robotic systems engineers.

Amplifier Circuits - Design and Applications

Introduces basic concepts of electronic circuits incorporating amplifiers required for instrumentation and communication, covering oscillators and phase-locked-loops.

Robotic Systems (ROS-based Mobile Robotics)

Covers Linux programming using C++ with the Object-Oriented approach, sensors and actuators for mobile robots, and the Robot Operating System (ROS) for simulation and development.

Robotics and Autonomous Systems

Provides an introduction to robotics applications covering modelling, design, planning and control of robot systems including forward and inverse kinematics, dynamics, and machine vision.

Industrial Robotics and Automated Assembly

Investigates how industrial robots and other equipment are used and integrated into more complex automated systems for manufacturing and assembly applications.

Individual Project

An extended individual project covering the range of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, assessed through a preliminary report, oral presentation, bench inspection, and final report.

Admission Requirements
