Mechatronics Engineering
Program Overview: BEng (Hons) Mechatronics at the University of Lincoln
The BEng (Hons) Mechatronics at the University of Lincoln is an industry-guided program that integrates mechanical engineering with electronics and intelligent computer control in the design and manufacture of products and processes. Developed in collaboration with global industrial partners such as Siemens, B&R Automation, and Schneider Electric, this course prepares you to become a skilled engineering professional capable of managing the design and development of advanced automation systems.
The first two years of study lay common foundations in mathematics, computing systems, mechanical and electrical engineering, and information and telecommunication in the industrial automation sector. In the third year, you have the opportunity to consolidate your practical knowledge through an individual project on an aspect of mechatronics engineering, allowing you to carry out independent research at a level appropriate for an honours degree.
The School of Engineering at Lincoln was founded in collaboration with Siemens and follows a core philosophy of research-led teaching. This award-winning collaboration, recognised by the Lord Stafford and Times Higher Education awards, ensures the curriculum is informed by the latest demands of the engineering sector and produces graduates who are aligned with the needs of industry.
Key Program Highlights
- Designed in collaboration with global industrial partners including Siemens, B&R Automation, and Schneider Electric
- Opportunity to undertake an optional additional year in industry for hands-on professional experience
- Currently seeking re-accreditation from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
- Interdisciplinary approach combining mechanical engineering, electronics, and intelligent computer control
Curriculum and Modules
The BEng (Hons) Mechatronics curriculum is structured across three years, progressing from foundational engineering principles to specialist mechatronics topics and an individual capstone project. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, workshop sessions, and laboratory classes, with assessment through coursework, written and practical exams, portfolios, group work, and presentations.
Engineering Mathematics
Core ModuleProvides a solid mathematical grounding essential for all engineers, underpinning other engineering modules. Theory is taught through real-world examples using both analytical and numerical techniques.
Electrical Engineering and Electronics
Core ModuleProvides a foundation in electrical engineering and electronics, covering essential principles without overly rigorous mathematical complexity. Prepares students for more advanced electrical and control modules.
Engineering Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics)
Core ModuleDevelops your capacity to predict the effects of force and deformation in engineering design. Covers statics, mechanics, and dynamics to build analytical capability for solving a wide variety of engineering problems.
Materials and Manufacturing
Core ModuleIntroduces the fundamental properties of engineering materials through understanding atomic and molecular interactions. Covers manufacturing processes and how process selection influences material properties.
Industrial Automation
Core ModuleIntroduces modern industrial automation architectures across three parts: sensors and actuators, industrial networks, and programmable logic controllers. Covers the main technological aspects used in industrial automation systems.
Individual Mechatronics Engineering Project
Core ModuleA substantial independent research project in the final year where you plan, research, and execute a major piece of mechatronics engineering work. Develops skills in critical judgement, independent work, and engineering competence.
