Curriculum and Modules
The MSc Sustainable Development is structured across four semesters totaling 120 ECTS. The first semester builds foundational knowledge, the second semester offers specialization at a partner university, the third semester integrates interdisciplinary approaches, and the fourth semester is dedicated to the master's thesis.
Fundamentals in Sustainable Development
30 ECTSIntroduces the concept of sustainability and current sustainability issues from different disciplinary perspectives, covering research and intervention strategies for societal transitions.
Specialisation Track (Mobility Semester)
30 ECTSDeepens knowledge in a specific area of sustainable development at a partner university. Tracks include natural sciences, social sciences, or economics and management, providing theoretical depth and research methodology training.
Integration Module: Interdisciplinary Case Studies
15 ECTSProvides students with scientific and social skills to work on inter- and transdisciplinary case studies addressing current sustainability challenges as team-based projects.
Project Management and Communication Skills
5 ECTSTeaches standard project management tools and communication strategies to effectively promote transformation and change within organizations and communities.
Further Specialisation Electives
10 ECTSAllows students to deepen their expertise through elective courses such as Sustainability Assessment, LCA and Bioeconomy, or Natural Resource Use and Conservation Economics.
Master's Thesis
30 ECTSAn independent final research thesis with a processing time of 23 weeks, assessed by two examiners from Leipzig University and a partner university. A research internship can be part of this module.
