Following the foundation of the German Empire in 1871, the alma mater became the largest and most renowned university in Germany, home to 29 Nobel Prize winners like Max Planck, Robert Koch or Fritz Haber. Prominent historical figures like Otto von Bismarck, Heinrich Heine and Karl Marx were students here. Owing to this newly gained attention, Humboldt’s ideas spread around the globe and inspired the creation of many akin universities.

Creating knowledge since 1502\n\nThe Martin Luther University is one of the winners of the Excellence Strategy. MLU applied for the Cluster of Excellence "Center for Chiral Electronics" (CCE) together with the Freie Universität Berlin, the University of Regensburg and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle. The Cluster of Excellence will receive up to 64.5 million euros in funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and will start in January 2026. It will initially run for seven years. Research will focus on new concepts for high-performance and energy-efficient electronics.

The Leuphana University Lüneburg emerged from the special legal mandate of the Lower Saxony state parliament to rethink university and create a model university for the Bologna Process. It is supported by a foundation under public law and sees itself as a place for free thirst for knowledge, imagination, personal development and social commitment. For its studies, it has developed a multi-award-winning study model with three schools, which is still unique in Germany today. Five faculties are the sponsors of transdisciplinary science initiatives, the Leuphana's research priorities in the fields of education, culture, sustainability, management and entrepreneurship, and public affairs.

The university’s driving objective is to further its development into an internationally-oriented Europa university.\n\nThe concept of being a "university of and for Europe" that is strongly geared towards the educational sciences is unique. The guiding principle of the University of Marburg is the combination of basic research, future-oriented practical application, and education in a wide range of subjects. At the heart of Europe and open to the world, Goethe University Frankfurt is a workshop for the future. Founded by and for citizens in 1914, it resumed this tradition in 2008 as an autonomous foundation university.
