University of Miskolc: Overview & History

The University of Miskolc traces its academic heritage to 1735, when the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy was established in Selmecbanya — one of the first non-ecclesiastical higher education institutions in the Habsburg Empire. After World War I, the institution relocated first to Sopron and then to Miskolc, where it was formally re-established by an act of parliament in 1949 as the Technical University of Heavy Industry.

During the 1980s the university began broadening its profile beyond heavy industry, adding faculties of law, economics, arts and humanities, health sciences, and music. In 1990 the institution was officially renamed the University of Miskolc. Today it is the largest university in Northern Hungary, offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs across eight faculties.

The university's expansive 85-hectare campus, known as Egyetemvaros (University Town), has been recognized as one of the most beautiful campuses in Hungary. With cooperation agreements with over 150 foreign universities and 160 bilateral Erasmus agreements, the University of Miskolc is a truly international institution welcoming students from approximately 50 countries.
