Program Overview: BSc Chemistry at FAU Erlangen–Nuremberg

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at FAU Erlangen–Nuremberg provides a thorough grounding in the core chemical disciplines, combining rigorous theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on laboratory training. You will explore inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and theoretical and computational chemistry, gaining a comprehensive understanding of chemical processes and their real-world applications.

A defining feature of this program is its varied mix of lectures, seminars, and practical laboratory work in research-grade facilities. From the very first semester, you will develop the ability to formulate scientific questions and work independently in the laboratory, gaining early insight into both fundamental and application-oriented chemical research.

FAU is one of Germany's largest research universities, founded in 1743, with five faculties and a strong commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research. The Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy focuses on molecular materials and bioactive compounds, and upon completing your bachelor's degree, you can seamlessly transition into FAU's English-language Master's program in Chemistry for advanced specialization.

Key Program Highlights

  • Admission-free program (no Numerus Clausus restriction) with winter semester intake
  • Extensive laboratory training from the first semester in state-of-the-art research facilities
  • Broad interdisciplinary curriculum including mathematics, physics, biochemistry, toxicology, and law
  • Direct pathway to FAU's English-language MSc Chemistry for further specialization

Curriculum and Modules

The BSc Chemistry curriculum spans six semesters divided into a foundational phase (semesters 1–4) and an in-depth specialization phase (semesters 5–6). In the first semester, you begin with modules in General Chemistry alongside Mathematics and Experimental Physics, which lay the foundations for scientific thinking. The program concludes with an independent Bachelor's thesis in the sixth semester.

General and Inorganic Chemistry

Semesters 1–4

Covers fundamental principles of general chemistry and inorganic chemistry, including atomic structure, bonding, coordination chemistry, and main group and transition metal chemistry, complemented by laboratory practicals.

Organic Chemistry

Semesters 2–5

Introduces the structure, reactivity, and synthesis of organic compounds. You will learn reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, and preparative techniques through lectures and extensive laboratory work.

Physical Chemistry

Semesters 2–5

Explores thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum chemistry, and spectroscopy. Laboratory sessions focus on experimental methods for measuring physical-chemical properties of matter.

Theoretical and Computational Chemistry

Semesters 2–4

Provides an introduction to quantum mechanical models, molecular modeling, and computational methods used to predict molecular properties and chemical behavior.

Mathematics and Experimental Physics

Semesters 1–2

Builds the essential mathematical and physical foundations for understanding chemical phenomena, including calculus, linear algebra, mechanics, and electromagnetism.

Bachelor's Thesis

Semester 6

An independent research project in which you work on a chemistry topic using subject-specific scientific methods within a defined time frame, presenting your results in an appropriate academic format.
