Conservation with Forestry BSc (Hons) — Program Overview

The Conservation with Forestry BSc (Hons) at Bangor University prepares you to tackle the greatest environmental challenges of our time, including climate change, loss of biodiversity, and deforestation. This degree provides an understanding of forest biodiversity, the ways in which it is influenced by people, and the role that forests can play in reducing the impacts of human activities.

You will focus on the principles of biological conservation, forest ecology and forest ecosystem function, and the management of forests to meet conservation objectives. There are opportunities to study abroad in the second year and to spend up to 12 months working for a conservation or forestry organisation through an optional placement year.

As the longest-standing Forestry department in the UK, Bangor University is one of only three universities across the UK training foresters to degree level. The university owns 82 hectares of woodland, many of them semi-natural, which are used for teaching, student projects, and research, providing unparalleled hands-on learning opportunities.

Key Program Highlights

  • Accredited by the Institute of Chartered Foresters, giving partial fulfilment of Professional Membership Entry
  • Week-long field courses every year of the degree, including an optional tropical conservation field course in Madagascar
  • Strong industry links with organisations such as Natural Resources Wales, Forestry Commission, Woodland Trust, and the National Trust
  • Optional placement year allowing up to 12 months of professional work experience with a conservation or forestry organisation
