Program Overview: Advanced Computational Methods MSc at Imperial College London

This MSc program at Imperial College London focuses on the scientific programming needed to perform numerical computations and experimental techniques for aeronautics. You will be equipped to solve complex problems numerically and develop the ability to write and create commercial software packages, rather than simply use them.

The program is designed for applicants who wish to enhance their engineering training or convert to an advanced engineering discipline from backgrounds in mathematics, physics, or computer science. Your interest in aerospace engineering will be matched by a series of research-informed modules centred on the latest theories and developments in the field.

You will also complete an individual research project, in which you can focus on your theoretical, computational, or experimental interests. It may even be possible for you to carry out your research project in industry, giving you direct professional exposure before graduation.

Key Program Highlights

  • Professionally accredited by The Royal Aeronautical Society, with accreditation renewed through 2030
  • Develop specialist computational skills applicable across aerospace, manufacturing, technical consultancy, and transport industries
  • Close collaboration with industry through Industrial Advisory Panels ensures graduates have in-demand skills
  • Access to industry-standard software and high-quality research facilities within the Department of Aeronautics

Curriculum and Modules

The curriculum combines core taught modules in the autumn and spring terms with an individual research project from May onwards. You will study foundational and advanced computational topics, then choose five optional modules to tailor the program to your specific interests in aeronautics and fluid-structure interaction.

Advanced Fluid Mechanics and Fluid-Structure Interaction

Covers advanced mathematical exposition of classical fluid dynamics with elements of the physics and theory of fluid-structure interaction.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

Provides a solid foundation in the theory and implementation of primarily 1D numerical methods for computational fluid dynamics.

Numerical Methods and Linear Algebra

Develops theoretical and practical understanding of standard algorithms for solving simultaneous linear equations and accompanying computational challenges.

Scientific Computing and Programming

Teaches the scientific programming tools and languages required to perform numerical computation, forming the technical backbone of the program.

Compressible Flow

Covers the basic effects of compressibility on fluid flow and teaches you to evaluate the behaviour of compressible flows in aeronautical applications.

Individual Research Project and Dissertation

A substantial piece of individual research that must include some element of originality. It can be wholly computational, theoretical, experimental, or a mixture, and is assessed via dissertation and oral presentation.

Elective Modules (Choose Five)

Advanced C++ Programming and Parallel Computing Aeroelasticity of Fixed-Wing Aircraft Hypersonic Flow Physics Machine Learning and AI for Aerospace
