Aerospace Engineering & Pilot Studies
Program Overview: Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies MEng
This integrated masters program combines the practical and theoretical aspects of flying with the underlying principles of aerospace engineering, offering you a unique pathway to both an engineering degree and pilot license preparation. You will undertake Private Pilot License (PPL) theoretical studies in Year 2, with the MEng year introducing Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) theoretical studies in Year 4 to prepare you for CAA ATPL examinations after graduation.
During your studies you will benefit from significant investment in high-quality facilities, including state-of-the-art software tools, flight simulators (including a full motion Redbird FMX simulator), subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels, and a UAV Lab. The university's Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC), a GBP 35 million facility, provides an integrated space for teaching and research with direct links to industry, enabling you to work on real-world projects with commercial partners.
The work experience element includes an optional 48-week sandwich placement in industry between Year 2 and Year 3, giving you invaluable professional experience. Practical flying can be arranged at additional cost through the university's flight training school partners, while the program's design complies with the educational requirements published by the UK Engineering Council, the Royal Aeronautical Society, and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
Key Program Highlights
- PPL theoretical studies in Year 2 and ATPL theoretical studies in Year 4, preparing you for CAA pilot license examinations
- Access to immersive flight simulators including a full motion Redbird FMX configurable as Cessna C172 and Piper Seminole PA44-S
- Optional 48-week industrial placement with established links to major aerospace companies
- GBP 35 million Engineering Innovation Centre with subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels, UAV Lab, and composites workshop
Curriculum and Modules
The MEng program is structured across four years of full-time study, building from foundational engineering principles through to advanced aerospace topics and ATPL pilot studies. Core modules are complemented by design projects, laboratory work, and opportunities for industrial placement, ensuring you graduate with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
You will analyse the functionality of each aerospace vehicle system and learn methods for safety assessment in relation to the design, reliability, safety, and certification of vehicle systems.
You will be introduced to the basic concepts, theories, and methodologies needed for the analysis of simple deformable structural components, as well as the generation of lift and drag on lifting surfaces operating in incompressible flows.
Undertaken in Year 2, this module covers the theoretical examination subjects required for the UK CAA Private Pilot's Licence. Successful completion is determined by passing the CAA PPL examinations.
A critical review of pilot studies needed for the theoretical examination subjects of the UK/EASA CAA Airline Transport Pilots Licence, preparing you for the ATPL exams after graduation.
You will design, develop, and demonstrate an integrated product comprising structure and system, with considerations regarding safety, business, commercial, and environmental impacts.
