BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering at UWS — Program Overview
The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering at the University of the West of Scotland provides you with the knowledge and skills needed for the design, build, and technological advancement of aerospace vehicles and their systems. This program builds upon the strengths of UWS's highly successful Aircraft Engineering degree and commences with Year 1 entry from September 2026.
You will explore current and emerging technologies including low and zero-carbon design for commercial aviation, drone technology, jet and space propulsion systems, and more. The degree has been designed with input from the regional aerospace industry to shape the specialised skills needed for aircraft design, manufacturing, aerodynamic and structural testing, and system operation and maintenance roles.
The program is currently seeking accreditation from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). A global shortage of aerospace engineers means there are significant employment opportunities both locally within Scotland's Prestwick aerospace cluster and internationally across the broader engineering sector.
Key Program Highlights
- Designed in partnership with Scotland's Prestwick aerospace cluster including BAE Systems, Spirit AeroSystems, Collins Aerospace, GE Aerospace, and Ryanair
- Covers emerging technologies such as low-carbon aviation design, drone technology, and space propulsion systems
- Seeking professional accreditation from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)
- Delivered through a combination of laboratories, software sessions, and industry visits to leading aerospace organisations
Curriculum and Modules
The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering curriculum is structured across four years, progressing from foundational engineering principles to advanced aerospace specialisations. The program combines theoretical learning with practical laboratory work, computer-aided design, and industry-linked projects to ensure you graduate with both academic depth and real-world skills.
Covers the design of aerospace structures and systems, strength of materials, and vibration theory, providing the foundational knowledge required for structural analysis in aerospace applications.
Develops your understanding of aerodynamic principles, aircraft performance analysis, and computational fluid dynamics used in the design and testing of aerospace vehicles.
Explores aerospace materials science and manufacturing processes including the design, analysis, and testing of composite structures used in modern aircraft construction.
Introduces CAD tools and information technology techniques for engineering design, progressing to advanced finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics in later years.
Covers intelligent systems, control technologies, and advanced computer-based analysis and simulation techniques applied to aerospace engineering challenges.
