Economics

The social science of economics uses mathematical methods and models to explain the interplay of the behavior of individuals, companies, and states. It addresses the core question of how people react to economic incentives. Using quantitative methods of statistics and econometrics, macroeconomic relationships are empirically tested and forecasts are made. Students of this subject should have an interest in abstract thinking and not be afraid of mathematics and statistics. In the first two semesters, the fundamentals of the subject are taught in compulsory lectures. In the remaining four semesters, students have a wide choice between lectures and seminars. The following areas of specialization are available: Quantitative Economics, Demographic Change, Labor and Social Affairs, Macroeconomics and the Financial System, and European Economics. The career field for those with a degree in economics is diverse. You can become an economics teacher or a business journalist. Banks, insurance companies, and large corporations offer career opportunities. Economists are also sought after in associations, ministries, and the public sector. Academic positions for economists are also available at the European Central Bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, and economic institutes. Those who are drawn to the wider world can work in international organizations such as the OECD, the World Bank, or the International Monetary Fund. And those who want to enter politics will be well prepared with a degree in economics.
