The University of Dundee is a public research university based in the city of Dundee on the east coast of Scotland. Founded as University College, Dundee in 1881 with a generous donation from the Baxter family of textile manufacturers, it was one of the first institutions in the UK to educate men and women side by side. The university's founding mission centred on promoting education regardless of sex or religion.
For most of its early existence, the institution served as a constituent college of the University of St Andrews. Following decades of significant expansion in student numbers, academic programmes, and research output, the University of Dundee gained independent university status by Royal Charter on 1 August 1967. Since then, it has grown into an internationally recognised centre for research, particularly in the life sciences, medicine, and art and design.
Today, the university is home to over 13,400 students from more than 140 countries, studying across a broad range of disciplines. With 84% of its research assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework 2021, Dundee continues to transform lives locally and globally through the creation, sharing, and application of knowledge.
