Greek Philology M.A.
University of Regensburg Campus, Germany
The master's program in Greek Philology aims to provide an in-depth, comprehensive overview of Greek literature (i.e., literature written in the ancient Greek language) from its beginnings to late antiquity. The focus of the program is on the intensive linguistic and content-related study of selected works of Greek prose and poetry, as well as - in the form of writing the master's thesis - on the research-related application of literary-scientific methods for their interpretation. In the process, the culture of antiquity is to be grasped in its historical dimension and developed in its afterlife, which is still effective today (e.g. drama, rhetoric, philosophy, mythology, visual arts, music).
As a single-subject master's degree, the Regensburg master's program in Greek Philology allows for an in-depth concentration on the methods and content of Greek Philology. Thus, depending on individual requirements and wishes, this mono-master offers the opportunity of even high-level specialization. The broadly defined admission requirements also make this program attractive for students from abroad.
Possible fields of activity: University (teaching and research; for this, a doctorate (Dr. phil.) is typically required), teaching as a lecturer (also outside the university), special research institutions, the education sector, library and publishing, cultural management, public administration, free enterprise, the press, politics and diplomacy.
Key skills acquired through study: Analytical and systematic ("logical") thinking; establishing, testing and refuting hypotheses when solving problems and, associated with this, an inherently flexible ability to persevere; intercultural competence relating to the intellectual-historical tradition of Europe and the subject of education; synergy effects with all other subjects in the humanities; knowledge of the original affinity between the humanities and the natural sciences; gaining a precise and accurate way of expressing oneself in German as well as a lively relationship to language in general.
