The University of Regensburg (Universität Regensburg) is a public research university founded on 18 July 1962 by the Landtag of Bavaria as the fourth full-fledged university in the state. Located on a modern campus at the southern edge of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg, it has grown from a regional institution into a nationally and internationally recognized center of research and teaching with a strong tradition in international cooperation.
With twelve faculties spanning the humanities, social sciences, law, business, natural sciences, medicine, and informatics, the university offers around 150 degree programs to over 21,000 students. Approximately 1,471 international students from more than 90 countries contribute to a vibrant, cosmopolitan campus community supported by over 3,400 staff members including 315 professors.
The university is particularly noted for its expertise in Eastern and Southeastern European studies, hosting the Bavarian University Centre for Central, East and Southeastern Europe (BAYHOST). Its most famous academic, Pope Benedict XVI, served as a professor of theology from 1969 until 1977 and formally retained his chair. The university maintains partnerships with more than 360 institutions worldwide.
