This module introduces students to the main features of specialised texts, involving analysis of specialised language as applied to six fields: Advertising, Business, IT, Medicine, Law, and Politics.

The Translator and the Specialised Text

Building on foundational text analysis skills, this module develops your ability to translate complex specialised texts across multiple professional domains, refining accuracy and stylistic appropriateness.

Translation Tools and the Translator

20 Credits

You will learn to use internet resources effectively, employ proprietary software for professional translation and terminology management, and develop transferability skills to adapt to various desktop-based and cloud translation tools.

Translating for International Organisations

20 Credits

This module focuses on translating institutional documents for organisations such as the United Nations and the European Union, developing the specialised skills required for institutional translation work.

Independent Translation Project

40 Credits

This CIOL-accredited capstone module allows you to undertake a substantial independent translation project. Successful completion offers exemption from one unit of the CIOL Diploma in Translation (DipTrans).

Admission Requirements

The Translation MA welcomes applicants with strong linguistic abilities and a passion for professional translation. Entry is competitive, and all applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other language.
