Program Overview: Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies BEng (Hons)
This program combines core aerospace engineering studies with dedicated pilot studies modules, giving you both the theoretical foundation and practical flying experience needed for a career in aviation and aerospace. You will study topics including aerodynamics, aerostructures, flight dynamics and control, propulsion systems, avionics, aerospace materials, and aircraft design, while also developing real-world flying skills.
The pilot studies component is based on the Private Pilot's License (PPL) ground school syllabus and is studied alongside a mandatory 20-hour flight training programme. You can choose between fixed-wing flying (aeroplanes) or rotary-wing flying (helicopters), with the latter dividing training between 10.5 hours of flight training and 9.5 hours of helicopter-relevant ground school.
All BEng and MEng degree programmes at the University of Liverpool's School of Engineering are accredited, or preparing for accreditation, by professional engineering institutions including the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The program is accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society on behalf of the Engineering Council, fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially meeting requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Key Program Highlights
- Mandatory 20-hour flight training programme with choice of fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft
- Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society and Institution of Mechanical Engineers
- Access to the students' pilots lab and Flight Simulation Group (FSG)
- Option to transfer to a Year in Industry variant to gain professional work experience
Curriculum and Modules
The curriculum covers core aerospace engineering fundamentals alongside specialist pilot studies modules across three years of study. You will progress from foundational engineering principles to advanced aerospace topics and an individual research project in your final year. Programme details and modules are illustrative and subject to change; contact Uni4Edu for the most current module information.
Based on the Private Pilot's License ground school syllabus, this module covers aviation theory including meteorology, navigation, air law, and flight principles alongside your chosen 20-hour flight training programme.
Study the fundamental principles governing airflow over aircraft surfaces, including lift generation, drag analysis, boundary layer theory, and computational aerodynamic methods.
Introduces fundamental concepts and theory of how engineering structures sustain loads, and demonstrates how stress analysis leads to the design of safer and more efficient structures.
Covers the principles of aircraft performance, stability, and control, including the mathematical modelling of aircraft motion and the analysis of flight dynamics.
Builds on foundational pilot studies with advanced topics aligned to the ATPL syllabus, deepening your knowledge of aviation operations, instrumentation, and advanced flight theory.
