Program Overview: Cardiovascular & Metabolic Disease MSc(MedSci)
Cardiovascular disease is projected to remain the single leading cause of death over the next two decades, accountable for considerable disability and reduction in quality of life. This MSc(MedSci) programme at the University of Glasgow addresses this critical global health challenge by delivering advanced teaching in cardiovascular science and biology.
The programme emphasises the epidemiology, genetics, pathological and molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular diseases and their pharmacological management. You will study within the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge research techniques in a translational research environment.
This MSc is led by experts in the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, and research is supported by the BHF, MRC, Wellcome Trust, CSO, BBSRC and the European Commission. Graduates emerge equipped with the skills necessary for a career in biomedical and cardiovascular research, with opportunities to progress to PhD studies.
Key Program Highlights
- Taught by experts at the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, one of only six BHF Centres of Excellence in the UK
- Research-intensive programme supported by major funding bodies including BHF, MRC, Wellcome Trust and the European Commission

- Opportunities to continue to PhD studies at the University of Glasgow upon successful completion
Curriculum & Modules
The programme follows a modular structure combining taught elements, tutorial sessions, critical review sessions, and practical laboratory sessions. You will cover core topics in cardiovascular science before undertaking an independent research dissertation supervised by an established cardiovascular researcher.
Basic Science of Cardiovascular Disease: Tissue, Cells and Signalling
20 CreditsProvides in-depth critical knowledge of the basic science underlying cardiovascular disease, including complex pathways and signalling processes that mediate disease in cells, tissues and animal models.
Clinical Aspects of CVD: Patients and Populations
20 CreditsDelivers in-depth knowledge of the causes of vascular disease and insight into investigations conducted to help clinicians decide how best to manage patients at both individual and population levels.
Cardiovascular Pharmacology
20 CreditsProvides an understanding of how cardiovascular drugs work, their interaction with the body in health and disease, and the appropriate therapeutic use of cardiovascular drugs in common clinical situations.
Lifestyle, Vascular and Metabolic Health
20 CreditsExplores the relationship between lifestyle factors and vascular and metabolic health, the biological mechanisms involved, and the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in prevention and management of vascular and metabolic disease.
Clinical and Research Laboratory Skills
10 CreditsEquips students with essential laboratory techniques and clinical research skills used in cardiovascular investigation, including practical hands-on training in modern research methodologies.
Research Dissertation Project
60 CreditsStudents plan and execute an independent research project, audit or critical review of the literature under the supervision of an established cardiovascular researcher, producing a 5,000-10,000 word dissertation and delivering an oral presentation.
