Program Overview: MSc Molecular Biosciences (Microbiology)

The MSc Molecular Biosciences (Microbiology) at the University of Bath provides you with a broad understanding of the molecular basis of biological systems, with a specialised focus on microbes and their role in disease, developing new medicines, improving food biosecurity, and environmental sustainability. With healthcare identified as one of the top global challenges for 2030, there is a growing demand for specialists equipped with advanced knowledge in this critical field.

You will be based primarily within the Infection and Immunity research group at Bath, where you will work alongside researchers at the forefront of microbial research. The programme focuses on the molecular principles underlying the biology of microorganisms, including their epidemiology, pathogenicity, and virulence in the context of medicine, public health, and agricultural biosecurity.

The unique course structure has been designed in consultation with clinical and industrial partners to give you the specialist knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in molecular biosciences. You will also have the opportunity to use specialist facilities, including computational methods to analyse large biological datasets to answer the major questions in microbiology, from bacterial epidemiology to evolution.

Key Program Highlights

  • Two hands-on research projects conducted in dedicated postgraduate labs alongside leading researchers from the Department of Life Sciences and the Milner Centre for Evolution
  • Specialised focus on microbial epidemiology, pathogenicity, virulence, and antibiotic resistance within the Infection and Immunity research group
  • A Broadening Horizons unit that strengthens employability through a project addressing global environmental sustainability challenges
  • Optional professional placement year available, providing real-world industry experience and valuable workplace skills

Curriculum and Modules

The MSc Molecular Biosciences (Microbiology) curriculum combines advanced taught content with extensive research experience. You will undertake training through two research projects while critically analysing research through seminar presentations and written work, all designed in consultation with clinical and industrial partners.

Research Project 1a: Laboratory Research Skills

A laboratory-based research unit providing the foundation for conducting molecular bioscience research using techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9, homologous recombination, nucleic acid manipulation, cloning, and bacterial transformation.

Research Project 1b: Extended Research Investigation

A research project carried out over 17-20 weeks providing the opportunity to plan, execute, and report a scientific investigation in the format of a research paper, building on skills from Research Project 1a.

Microbial Pathogenesis and Virulence

This module examines the molecular principles underlying the biology of microorganisms, focusing on their epidemiology, pathogenicity, and virulence mechanisms in the context of medicine and public health.

Infection and Immunity

Explore the host-pathogen interactions that underpin infectious disease, including immune responses, antimicrobial resistance, and strategies for developing new therapeutic approaches.

Broadening Horizons: Biosciences and Sustainability

This unit advances biosciences as integral to addressing global environmental sustainability challenges, covering global citizenship, environmental stewardship, social justice, ethics, and employability skills for the global workplace.

Seminars and Critical Analysis

Develop your ability to critically analyse and present cutting-edge research through seminar presentations and written work, strengthening your scientific communication and analytical skills.
