Program Overview: M.A. Science and Technology Studies at TUM

The M.A. Science and Technology Studies (STS) at the Technical University of Munich is a research-oriented graduate program that examines the complex interactions between science, technology, society, and politics. From biotechnology to energy transitions and from automated mobility to data security, this program equips students with the analytical tools to address the most pressing sociotechnical challenges of our time.

Drawing on interdisciplinary theories and research methods from social sciences, philosophy, and the humanities, the program enables students to critically analyze techno-scientific problems in a diagnostic and problem-oriented manner. Students develop essential reflexive, collaborative, and communicative skills while exploring questions about scientific and technological change, knowledge production, and the governance of innovation.

Housed within TUM's Department of Science, Technology and Society, one of Europe's most prominent STS research institutions, the program offers optional specializations in the Philosophy of Science and Technology or the History of Science and Technology. The curriculum provides a rigorous foundation in qualitative social science research methods alongside deep engagement with cutting-edge STS scholarship.

Key Program Highlights

  • Research-oriented education at one of Europe's leading STS departments with interdisciplinary faculty spanning sociology, philosophy, history, and anthropology
  • Optional specializations in Philosophy of Science and Technology or History of Science and Technology for tailored academic focus
  • Rigorous training in empirical social science research methods including ethnography, interviews, and collaborative knowledge production
  • Unique STS-MINT module allowing students to attend STEM courses and critically reflect on their social, ethical, and political dimensions

Curriculum and Modules

The STS curriculum is structured across four semesters, combining mandatory foundational modules with elective specialization options. Students complete 90 ECTS through coursework modules and 30 ECTS through their Master's thesis, for a total of 120 ECTS credits required to graduate.

STS 1: Practices and Politics of Science and Technology

10 ECTS

This foundational first-semester module introduces students to core STS concepts including scientific practice, technical controversies, the politics and publics of science and technology, and the relationship between science, technology, democracy, and the state.

STS 2: Philosophy of Science and Technology

5 ECTS

An introduction to fundamental topics in the philosophy of science and technology, covering conceptual, methodological, and ethical perspectives with a focus on 20th-century schools and strands such as logical positivism and hypothetico-deductivism.

STS 3: History of Science and Technology

5 ECTS

This module explores the historical developments of science and technology, examining how STS developed as a field from sociology, philosophy, history, and anthropology through the study of major theories, researchers, and case studies.

Qualitative Research Methods

10 ECTS

Intensive training in empirical STS research approaches including cooperative and collaborative knowledge production in multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary contexts, covering ethnographic projects, focus group settings, and interview methods.

STS-MINT: Reflexive Perspectives on STEM Fields

10 ECTS

Students attend STEM courses and analyze disciplinary knowledge cultures, developing original reflexive perspectives on science and engineering fields. Social science students visit introductory STEM courses while STEM-background students choose advanced courses.

Practicing Research and Master's Thesis

30 ECTS

In the third semester, students develop independent research projects that prepare them for their Master's thesis. The fourth semester is devoted to the thesis, accompanied by a colloquium with three presentations for constructive peer and faculty feedback.
