Biomedical Engineering & Entrepreneurship
Program Overview: Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship MRes
The MRes in Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship (MDDE) at Imperial College London is a unique 12-month programme that combines the development of medical devices and biomedical engineering knowledge alongside entrepreneurship skills. You will develop research and analytical skills related to bioengineering before specialising in the area of medical device development, then examine the processes required to get a device to market, from concept to business planning and market emergence.
This was the first medical device entrepreneurship programme in the UK when it launched in 2013, developed from the need for more medical device activity and to enhance opportunities for research technologies to emerge successfully into patient application. The programme capitalises on the strength of Imperial's Department of Bioengineering alongside access to local hospitals through the Imperial NHS Trust and London's reputation as a financial hub.
Much of the training is based around a year-long group project aimed at developing an engineering developmental and start-up business plan around a medical device concept. This hands-on approach prepares you for careers in entrepreneurship, finance, venture capital, engineering, consultancy, and other roles that demand critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Key Program Highlights
- First medical device entrepreneurship programme of its kind in the UK, pioneering since 2013
- Accredited by the IET, IOM3, and IED on behalf of the Engineering Council for Chartered Engineer registration
- Year-long group project developing a real start-up business plan around a medical device concept
- Programme has delivered impact including creation of start-ups and follow-on funding amounting to $2.5M from angel investors and government grants
Curriculum & Modules
The MRes MDDE involves a small amount of formal teaching complemented by extensive project-based learning. In addition to a module providing specific training in medical device entrepreneurship, a selection of short workshop format modules is provided primarily in the first term to address key technical training requirements common to many areas of bioengineering. You will also choose two optional modules from a range examining key aspects of biomedical engineering and business.
