Program Overview: BS in Applied Biotechnology

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Biotechnology at the University of Arizona teaches students how to use chemical and biological processes to address pressing challenges in food production, health, and sustainability. Housed within the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, this interdisciplinary program is a collaboration between the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences, the School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness, and the School of Plant Sciences.

The program pairs a solid foundation in microbiology, plant biology, food science, and nutrition with hands-on learning alongside faculty mentors and through outside internships. You will develop skills to use microorganisms and plants in modern food production, medicine, and the chemical industry, preparing you for a career in biosciences working in agriculture, food, or manufacturing.

Students can choose from three emphasis areas to customize their degree: Applied Biotechnology, which is the most versatile option; Food and Beverage Fermentation, focusing on the science of turning ingredients into higher-value food and beverage products; and Industrial Plant and Microbial Biotechnology, which provides an in-depth understanding of genetic engineering and growth of plants and microbes to make products.

Key Program Highlights

  • Three customizable emphasis areas including Applied Biotechnology, Food and Beverage Fermentation, and Industrial Plant and Microbial Biotechnology
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration across three university schools for a comprehensive biotechnology education
  • Hands-on laboratory, field, and internship experiences alongside faculty mentors
  • Prepares graduates for careers addressing global challenges in population growth, human health, and climate change
