Formal teaching runs from October to the end of March, with examinations during the summer term. A major research project, worth approximately half of the total mark, is undertaken alongside established research groups during the summer term.

Materials Characterisation

Compulsory

Gain a firm foundation in the fundamentals of the characterisation of the structure of materials, including structural, thermal, morphological and chemical properties using a range of analytical techniques.

Modelling and Simulation of Materials

Compulsory

Become familiar with a selection of important modelling techniques and use these methods to perform simulations applicable to a broad spectrum of material types at different length scales.

Research Skills and Seminars

Compulsory

Obtain the knowledge and skills needed to support your research project, including opportunities to attend and report on current research seminars delivered by leading academics.

Engineering Alloys

Elective

Draw together key concepts within the processing-microstructure-properties-performance domain to consider the opportunities and challenges of using engineering alloys in real components.

Engineering and Glass Ceramics

Elective

Assess the main methods and fundamental principles used for the processing of engineering and glass ceramics, and understand the factors that influence their mechanical properties.

MSc Research Project

Core

Undertake a specially designed research project within an active research area, working alongside established research groups with access to state-of-the-art facilities and world-leading academics.
