Curriculum & Modules

Nano and Atomic Scale Imaging 1

Covers the underlying physical principles required to understand widely applied techniques for the characterisation of materials at the nanometre and atomic length scales, including SEM, SPM, and TEM.

Statistical Mechanics

Core Module

Provides understanding of the key principles and applications of Statistical Mechanics and their relevance to current developments in physics, at a level appropriate for a professional physicist.

Advanced Data Analysis for Physics and Astronomy

Core Module

A comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of advanced data analysis, with particular focus on applications in physics and astronomy and the growing use of Bayesian Inference methods.

Imaging and Detectors

Core Module

Explores the principles and technologies behind imaging systems and detector technologies used in materials science and physics research applications.

MSc Research Project

Core Module

An extended, in-depth research project embedded within one of the Department of Physics and Astronomy's internationally leading research groups, developing subject-specific and generic skills for scientific leadership.
