Program Overview: International Master's in Neuroscience

The International Master's Degree in Neuroscience at the University of Trieste was the first program of its kind in Italy, established in 2003 and fully taught in English since 2008. It is organized in collaboration with the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) and is part of the Network of European Neuroscience Schools, serving as the national benchmark program for neuroscience education in Italy.

The program provides multidisciplinary training in both basic and applied neurobiology, spanning from single molecules to whole organisms in normal and pathological conditions. Students gain strong professional skills for the development of fundamental knowledge and innovative therapies and diagnostics for nervous system disorders.

Teaching is delivered by faculty from the University of Trieste and SISSA, supplemented by visiting professors from prestigious European and American universities, as well as professionals from the pharmaceutical and biomedical industry. Since 2009, the program has also offered a professional development workshop taught by industry experts to connect academic training with the production realities of the sector.

Key Program Highlights

  • First international neuroscience master's degree in Italy, established in 2003 and taught entirely in English since 2008
  • Delivered in collaboration with SISSA, one of Italy's leading centers for advanced scientific research
  • Part of the Network of European Neuroscience Schools with visiting professors from top international universities
  • Two specialization tracks available in the third semester: Molecular Neuroscience (NeuroMol) and Cognitive Neuroscience (NeuroCog)

Curriculum and Course Structure

The program is structured across four semesters, progressing from foundational neuroscience topics to advanced specializations. The first year builds core knowledge in neuroanatomy, cellular neurobiology, and neurophysiology, while the second year allows students to specialize through elective tracks and complete a research thesis.

Neuroanatomy and Vertebrate Nervous System

12 ECTS

Comprehensive study of the anatomy of the vertebrate nervous system, covering structural organization from spinal cord to cerebral cortex and sensory systems.

Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology

9 ECTS

Explores the cellular and molecular foundations of neural function, including ion channels, synaptic transmission, signal transduction pathways, and glial cell biology.

Neurophysiology

9 ECTS

Examines the physiological mechanisms underlying neural activity, from membrane biophysics and action potential generation to neural coding and sensory processing.

Neuropharmacology

6 ECTS

Covers the principles of drug action on the nervous system, including neurotransmitter systems, receptor pharmacology, and the pharmacological basis of neurological and psychiatric treatments.

Neuropathology and Clinical Neuroscience

9 ECTS

Studies the pathological mechanisms underlying neurological diseases including neurodegenerative disorders, neuroinflammation, and developmental neuropathologies.

Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging

9 ECTS

Investigates higher brain functions such as perception, attention, memory, and decision-making using advanced neuroimaging techniques including fMRI, EEG, and MEG.

Elective Courses and Specialization Tracks
