The undergraduate neuroscience program at Loyola University New Orleans explores the science of the nervous system and brain to better understand human behaviors and improve health outcomes. As an interdisciplinary field, students investigate the brain as it relates to biology, psychology, physics, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and statistics.

At Loyola, you will gain hands-on experience through faculty-led undergraduate research opportunities and can customize your studies through one of three specialized concentration tracks: Biology, Psychology, or Physics. The program also offers an honors version in partnership with the University Honors Program for high-achieving students.

With state-of-the-art facilities including an EEG lab, a rodent neuroscience facility, and ion channel electrophysiology equipment, Loyola is one of the only universities in Louisiana with the faculty and resources to mentor undergraduates pursuing an interdisciplinary approach to studying the nervous system and behavior.

Curriculum and Modules

The BS in Neuroscience is a 120 credit hour program that includes Loyola Core requirements (40-41 credits), neuroscience major core courses (30 credits), concentration courses, adjunct courses in language and natural sciences, and general electives. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA in both the major curriculum and the Loyola cumulative curriculum.

Foundations in Neuroscience

The entry-level course for all neuroscience programs, introducing students to the fundamental concepts of the nervous system, brain structure, and the interdisciplinary nature of neuroscience research.

Behavioral Neuroscience

3 credits

An investigation of the biological basis of behavior, focusing on neural and hormonal regulation and control of behavior, bridging neuroscience with psychological science.

Cognitive Neuroscience

Familiarizes students with cognitive processes underlying human behavior, their experimental origins, and their theoretical significance in understanding brain function.

Academic Merit Scholarship

Automatically awarded to qualified applicants based on academic record and GPA. No separate application is required. Renewable for up to eight semesters with satisfactory academic progress.

International Student Scholarship

Available to incoming international freshmen based on academic merit. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is preferred. Loyola offers merit-based scholarships up to and including full tuition for qualified international applicants.

Honors Program Scholarship

USD 5,000 per year

Awarded to students admitted to the University Honors Program. Renewable for up to four years. The application deadline for Honors consideration is December 1.
