Earth Sciences BSc at the University of St Andrews

The Earth Sciences BSc (Hons) at the University of St Andrews is a four-year programme run by the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. It equips you with the skills and knowledge to investigate Earth as an interconnected system, integrating the study of the oceans, atmosphere, biosphere, and geosphere throughout Earth's 4.6 billion year history.

During your degree, you will take advantage of hands-on field, laboratory, and computational research projects investigating topics ranging from carbon capture and ocean acidification to the impact of volcanoes on climate and society. Teaching is strongly integrated with the School's leading research programmes, which rank among the top in the UK for research impact.

St Andrews is an ideal place to study Earth Sciences, surrounded by beaches, the sea, and geological outcrops. The School's undergraduate programmes include over 100 days in the field across Scotland and Europe, with all compulsory field trip costs fully subsidised by the School.

Key Programme Highlights

  • Over 100 days of fully subsidised fieldwork across Scotland and Europe, including trips to the Scottish Highlands, Lake District, Spain, and oceanographic cruises
  • Research-led teaching by an experienced team within a School ranked among the top in the UK for world-leading research in Earth Sciences
  • Flexible modular degree structure allowing you to combine Earth Sciences with modules from other disciplines in your first two years
  • Individual Honours research dissertation allowing you to pursue a topic of personal interest and present findings both orally and in written form

Curriculum and Modules

The Earth Sciences BSc follows St Andrews' flexible modular degree system. In your first two years (sub-honours), you take required Earth Sciences modules alongside at least one other subject. In third and fourth year (Honours), you specialise through advanced options and an independent research dissertation.

Understanding Planet Earth

20 credits

Provides a foundation in the study of the Earth, introducing key elements of geological and environmental sciences including Earth structure, Earth history, and the evolution of life.

Earth's Resource Challenges

20 credits

Introduces the critical roles Earth and environmental scientists play in society, addressing natural resources, the hydrological cycle, natural hazards, and solutions to the climate crisis.

Dynamic Earth: The Earth System

20 credits

Examines Earth's behaviour, its interactions with the atmosphere and biosphere, and its evolution from an early magma-ocean world to today, with training in palaeontology, isotope dating, and geophysical methods.

Dynamic Earth: Earth Surface Processes

20 credits

Focuses on low-temperature processes in Earth's outer envelopes, including oceans, atmosphere, and the Critical Zone, exploring their impact on climate and the environment with a focus on fieldwork and statistical skills.

Dynamic Earth: Magma, Minerals and Metamorphism

20 credits

Focuses on the geology and geochemistry of the solid Earth and processes in Earth's interior, covering igneous and metamorphic petrology and mineralogy.

Research Dissertation

40 credits

An individual research project on an area of Earth Sciences allowing you to pursue a topic of personal interest in depth. You present your project both orally and in dissertation form.
