Drug Discovery Science

The Drug Discovery Science MSc is designed for graduates who wish to develop specialist knowledge of the processes involved in discovering, designing, and developing new therapeutic medicines. The programme integrates key concepts from biology, chemistry, and pharmaceutical science to provide a comprehensive understanding of the drug discovery pipeline.

Students explore core areas such as disease biology and target identification, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, drug metabolism, and preclinical development. Emphasis is placed on understanding how fundamental research is translated into safe and effective treatments for human disease.

The programme is research-informed and encourages critical engagement with current scientific literature and industry practices. Students develop advanced analytical and research skills, including experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of preclinical data. Learning is supported through lectures, seminars, case studies, and research-focused activities.

Students also examine emerging approaches and technologies in drug discovery, including high-throughput screening, computational drug design, bioinformatics, and personalised medicine. Regulatory, ethical, and commercial considerations are integrated throughout the programme, reflecting the real-world context of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

A substantial research project or dissertation allows students to investigate a drug discovery–related topic in depth, often aligned with laboratory-based or industry-relevant research. Graduates of the Drug Discovery Science MSc are well prepared for careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, biomedical research laboratories, clinical research organisations, and regulatory environments, as well as for further postgraduate or doctoral study.
