Medical Education (Intercalated) BMSc (Hons)

Studying medicine gives you a clear path to becoming a doctor, but what if you’d like the opportunity to study a specific topic in more detail or explore a more lab-based or theoretical area of medicine? This is where an intercalated degree could be of benefit.

With an intercalated degree you can spend a year studying a topic of interest. This allows you to:

• become more informed about different options for your career post-graduation
• gain new transferable skills, including research skills
• get a deeper insight into a subject area that interests you

This course focuses on building your knowledge of medical education by gaining an understanding in the context of teaching others and educational research methodology.

You will explore and evaluate the key principles of educational theory – including curriculum design and educational policy, and teaching and assessment skills – and you will learn how to integrate and apply these theoretical elements to practice.

Peer learning and discussion will help you explore new ideas, reflect on experience and develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

There are also opportunities to present at conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, attend local staff development courses, work on collaborative projects with other institutions, and visit the Scottish Government.
