Program Overview: Gateway to Medicine MBChB

The Gateway to Medicine is a one-year preparatory course at the University of Dundee designed to support students from widening access backgrounds towards entry onto the five-year MBChB medicine program. If you have not studied chemistry to the required level or your grades have been affected by personal hardship, this program offers a structured pathway into medical education with experienced staff supporting you from day one.

During the Gateway year, your studies are tailored to your personal academic needs. You will cover essential science subjects such as chemistry, biology, maths, and physics, alongside clinical orientation modules based at Ninewells Hospital. Upon successful completion, you receive a Certificate of Higher Education in Life Sciences for Medicine and gain direct entry to Level 1 of the Dundee MBChB course.

The program benefits from a small, supportive learning community with access to buddy systems, peer tutoring, and medical student societies. You will also have opportunities to shadow medical students on hospital wards and gain hands-on healthcare experience through NHS Tayside placements or charity volunteering.
