English and American Studies MSt

The MSt in English and American Studies is structured as an intensive three-term journey through four main academic components. The program profile emphasizes a "Transatlantic Critic" model, where students analyze how literary movements traveled across the Atlantic, evolving through unique social and political pressures. This course offers significant intellectual flexibility, allowing students to pursue specific interests that often traverse the boundaries of broad historical periods. The academic experience begins with core seminars tailored to the dual nature of the degree, paired with a specialized course in Book History and Theories of Text. This component ensures that students understand the material life of the book, from colonial printing presses to the modern global publishing industry.

This scholarly training is balanced by the opportunity to choose optional papers taught in small-group seminars, where students can delve into niche topics such as the American Renaissance or the influence of British modernism on the Harlem Renaissance. A defining feature of the program is the transition to independent authority as students research and write a dissertation under the guidance of a specialist supervisor. A unique highlight of this process is the student-organized conference where the cohort presents their research findings, a professionalizing experience supported by the active English Graduates at Oxford community. Throughout the year, students have access to lectures by leading global writers and theorists while participating in student-led reading groups. Graduates emerge as specialized experts in Anglo-American culture, uniquely equipped for a DPhil or for leadership roles in the arts.
