Program Overview: MSc Volcanology at Federico II

The Master of Science in Volcanology at the University of Naples Federico II is a two-year, English-taught program developed in collaboration between the university and the INGV Vesuvian Observatory. Situated in Naples, a city flanked by Campi Flegrei, Vesuvius, and Ischia — three active volcanic systems — the program transforms the surrounding landscape into a living laboratory for volcanological study.

The curriculum equips you with in-depth theoretical and experimental knowledge of the physical and chemical processes that control volcano behaviour and related hazards. You will gain a complete understanding of the geological, geochemical, petrochemical, and geophysical aspects of volcanic systems, including their dynamics and monitoring.

Courses are delivered by leading scientists from Federico II and the Osservatorio Vesuviano-INGV, combining lectures, laboratory work, PC-assisted experiments, and extensive fieldwork on active volcanic zones. The final semester is dedicated to an original research thesis supervised by faculty and observatory researchers.

Key Program Highlights

  • Taught entirely in English by internationally recognized volcanologists from Federico II and INGV Vesuvian Observatory
  • Located between Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, and Ischia — an unparalleled natural laboratory for volcanic research
  • Hands-on fieldwork, laboratory sessions, and internship opportunities at INGV and Italian Civil Protection offices
  • Original research thesis in the final term, with access to cutting-edge monitoring networks and analytical facilities

Curriculum & Modules

The MSc in Volcanology follows a four-term structure across two academic years. The first term is devoted to mandatory courses, while elective options become available from the second term onward. The final term of the second year is entirely dedicated to the research dissertation worth 24 ECTS.

Advanced Volcanology

Covers the principles of magma discharge, degassing, and fragmentation and their control on eruption mechanisms, along with classification schemes for common eruption types and styles.

Magmatology

Explores the processes of genesis and differentiation of magmas, including the physical and chemical behaviour of magmas and their constituents at variable pressure and high temperature.

Seismology and Volcano Seismology

Covers fundamental equations and their solutions, body and surface wave properties, seismic signal classification, and source and wave propagation features in volcanic settings.

Volcanotectonics

A multidisciplinary module joining structural geology, tectonics, geodesy, and physics to volcanological research, including methods such as remote sensing and deformation analysis related to magmatic intrusion.

Volcanology Field Course

Provides comprehensive field training covering volcanic geology, physical volcanic processes, eruption mechanisms, deposit interpretation, and stratigraphic succession analysis on active systems.

Quantitative Methods and Data Analysis

Covers Bayesian and frequentist probabilistic frameworks in stochastic modelling and inverse problems, linear algebra review, statistical hypothesis testing, and basic MATLAB programming.

Elective Modules

Isotope Geochemistry Applied to Volcanology Volcanic Landforms and Geomorphology Landslides in Volcanic Areas Volcanic Hazard and Risk Assessment
