The BSc (Hons) Midwifery at the University of Lincoln prepares you to become a registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Underpinned by national policy, this degree focuses on women-centred holistic care, combining rigorous academic theory with extensive practical placements across the childbearing continuum.
The programme is structured as 50 per cent theory and 50 per cent practice-based learning, giving you the opportunity to experience a wide range of clinical placements from the antenatal to the postnatal period, including intrapartum care. You will also have the unique opportunity to become Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) ready at the point of qualifying.
Teaching takes place in the Sarah Swift Building, which houses realistic clinical simulation suites that replicate home and hospital environments. You will be encouraged to think critically, apply evidence-based practice, and ensure that women and birthing people remain at the centre of the decision-making process throughout their care journey.

Curriculum and Modules
The BSc (Hons) Midwifery curriculum is mapped to NMC requirements for the education of student midwives and is informed by national policy. Across three years, you will progress through theory and practice modules that build your knowledge, clinical skills, and professional confidence to deliver safe, compassionate midwifery care.
This module introduces the principles of respectful, family-centred care in midwifery practice. You will explore the importance of involving women and their families in decision-making and delivering compassionate, individualised care throughout the childbearing continuum.
This module covers the anatomy, physiology, and biological sciences that underpin midwifery practice. You will develop a strong scientific foundation to support your understanding of pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period.
Focusing on the holistic care of women and birthing people, this module develops your clinical skills across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care. You will learn to assess physical, social, and psychological needs and provide evidence-based midwifery support.
This module explores proactive approaches to maternity care, including public health promotion, risk assessment, and safeguarding. You will examine how midwives can support women in making informed choices and advocate for optimal maternal and neonatal outcomes.
You will develop knowledge and skills related to the care of the newborn, including neonatal assessment, feeding support, and recognising deviations from normal. This module prepares you for the NIPE examination readiness that is a distinctive feature of this programme.
