Curriculum and Modules

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery curriculum is structured across three years, progressing from foundational universal midwifery care through complex care and autonomous practice. Teaching methods include simulation-based learning, interprofessional education, and extensive clinical placements with NHS Trust partners.

Introduction to Universal Midwifery Care

This foundational module introduces core universal midwifery care, covering anatomy and physiology, pregnancy adaptations, labour, birth, and postnatal care. You will explore the role of the midwife and its impact on the women and birthing people you will support.

Midwifery Practice: Core Skills

Develop essential clinical midwifery skills through supervised practice placements. You will experience community midwifery, home and midwife-led units, and begin building your Brookes Practice Portfolio alongside the national practice assessment document (MORA).

Supporting Women with Additional Complexity

In Year 2, you will learn how to support women with additional complex needs, including medical conditions, mental health issues, and social vulnerabilities. This module deepens your clinical reasoning and collaborative care skills.

Elective Module Placement

Choose a specialist placement area that aligns with your interests, such as international placements, women's prison midwifery, or mental health mother and baby units. This module allows you to explore midwifery care in diverse settings.

Autonomous Midwifery Practice and Caseloading

In Year 3, you will provide caseloading midwifery care to a small group of women in supervised student groups. You will also explore your personal midwifery philosophy and prepare for autonomous practice as a registered midwife.

Midwifery Research Project (Dissertation)

Select a topic of personal interest relevant to midwifery practice and critically investigate it through a literature review, research proposal, or analytical essay. You will demonstrate your ability to consolidate a systematic body of knowledge within your project write-up.
