The MSc in Health Research at the University of Leeds delivers advanced research methods training designed and delivered by active applied health and social care researchers. This program equips you with the knowledge and skills needed to design, conduct, and report high-quality applied research addressing health and social care challenges.

Ideal for health and social care professionals, those already working in research, and anyone with an interest in applied health and social care research, the program covers research philosophy, quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method study design, data management and analysis, and critical appraisal. You will also complete an independent small-scale research project under expert supervision.

Housed within the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences in the School of Medicine, the program benefits from strong partnerships with the National Health Service and other health organisations. You will learn alongside colleagues from diverse professional backgrounds including medics, nurses, allied health professionals, and social workers, supported by an interdisciplinary team of applied researchers.

Curriculum and Modules

The MSc Health Research comprises five compulsory modules and four optional modules, totalling 180 credits. Compulsory modules are studied in a structured sequence, building your research competence progressively from foundational principles through to an independent research project. Most taught modules are delivered in intensive blocks over four consecutive days, with gaps of several weeks between modules.

Getting Started in Research

15 Credits

Introduces the fundamental principles of health and social care research, including research philosophy, ethical considerations, and the practicalities of planning and conducting research studies.

Capturing and Handling Data in Research

15 Credits

Covers practical approaches to data collection, management, and handling in health research, including working with quantitative and qualitative datasets and ensuring data integrity.

Analytic Research

15 Credits

Focuses on analytic research designs used in health and social care, including observational studies and critical appraisal of existing research evidence.

Intervention Research

15 Credits

Explores the design, conduct, and evaluation of intervention studies in health and social care settings, including randomised controlled trials and complex interventions.

Health Research Project

60 Credits

An independent small-scale research project where you design, conduct, and report your own applied health or social care research under expert supervision, supported by seminars on key research skills.
