Program Overview: MS in Epidemiology at University of Arizona
The Master of Science in Epidemiology at the University of Arizona is offered through the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, Arizona's first and only CEPH-accredited college of public health. This research-focused program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue rigorous training in epidemiological research, equipping graduates to address critical questions about disease distribution, health disparities, and population health outcomes.
The program offers four specialized tracks: Clinical Research, Infectious Diseases, Field Methods, and Lifecourse/Chronic Disease Epidemiology. Within these tracks, you will complete a core set of methodological courses in epidemiology and biostatistics, plus specialty units that allow you to build a strong foundation while deepening skills in a defined area of interest.
Graduates of the MS in Epidemiology occupy positions as research administrators, program managers, analysts, general epidemiologists, and evaluators in universities, health departments, corporations, and governmental agencies. The program typically requires approximately two years for full-time students, with the first year devoted to core coursework and thesis proposal development, and the second year focused on remaining coursework and completion of the master's thesis research.
Key Program Highlights
- Four specialized tracks including Clinical Research, Infectious Diseases, Field Methods, and Lifecourse/Chronic Disease Epidemiology
- CEPH-accredited college of public health with continuous accreditation since 2003
- Hands-on thesis research with leading faculty in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics
- STEM-designated program eligible for up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) for international graduates
Curriculum and Modules
The MS in Epidemiology curriculum combines core methodological training in epidemiology and biostatistics with 9 units of specialty coursework within your chosen track. The course of study is developed collaboratively between the student and their Faculty Advisor, then approved by the student's Graduate Committee and the Epidemiology Program Director.
Principles of Epidemiology
3 UnitsCovers fundamental epidemiologic concepts, study designs, measures of disease frequency and association, and the application of epidemiologic reasoning to public health problems.
Biostatistics for Public Health
3 UnitsIntroduces biostatistical methods including descriptive statistics, probability theory, and inferential statistical techniques used to draw practical conclusions from empirical health data.
Advanced Epidemiologic Methods
3 UnitsBuilds on foundational epidemiology coursework by exploring advanced analytic techniques, confounding control strategies, effect modification, and causal inference methods.
Epidemiology Seminar (EPID 696A)
1 Unit (taken twice)A seminar series where students engage with current epidemiologic research, present their own work, and participate in scholarly discussion with faculty and peers.
Data Analysis and Statistical Computing
3 UnitsProvides hands-on training in statistical software for managing, analyzing, and interpreting epidemiologic data sets, with emphasis on practical application to research questions.
Master's Thesis Research
6 UnitsStudents conduct independent epidemiologic research under faculty supervision, culminating in a written thesis that demonstrates mastery of research design, data analysis, and scientific communication.
