Mathematics
University of Frankfurt (Goethe University Frankfurt), Germany
In mathematics studies, you learn to derive logical relationships and practice argumentation and proof. This involves less calculation than many expect. Almost all known rules are questioned, and new structures, such as new types of numbers or high-dimensional spaces, are discovered. Among other things, you'll learn about the mathematical laws of chance and how fair prices are determined in the financial markets. Optimization, for example, covers how a navigation system calculates the shortest routes or the best strategic approach when fighting with others over a limited resource. Frankfurt's mathematics department boasts a dedicated, young teaching team. Four lecturers have already received the university-wide award for excellent teaching in recent years. Approximately 20 professors and over 40 research assistants are available to supervise the mathematics degree programs. The student-teacher ratio in Frankfurt is excellent, ensuring close personal contact between professors, staff, and students. A preparatory course and orientation days help with the initial transition from school to university. The Frankfurt Mathematics Department has a learning center with peer tutors, providing a successful, ongoing point of contact for all questions related to mathematics. Most introductory courses are recorded and posted online as videos, along with additional learning aids. The GU is spread across several campuses. To take a MiNT subject as an applied subject, students must transfer between them. Studying mathematics in the financial center of Frankfurt offers a wide range of opportunities for on-site internships, thus enabling a smooth career entry. In addition, employees of Frankfurt financial institutions regularly present insights into practice-oriented workflows at the Institute of Mathematics' professional practice colloquium.
