Program Overview

The Civil and Structural Engineering BEng (Hons) at the University of Dundee equips you with the skills and experience that employers need, combining design, technology, and construction to address real-world challenges. You will gain a strong foundation in key areas such as geomechanics, structural analysis, surveying, materials, and fluid mechanics while learning to develop creative and practical solutions for a sustainable future.

From the start of the program, you will work with advanced digital tools and gain insight into how the civil engineering industry operates. Small class sizes ensure personalised support, and the teaching team works closely with industry experts to keep the curriculum aligned with emerging technologies and professional needs.

In your final year, you will carry out an individual research project in a specialised area and bring the entire degree together in a conceptual design project that plans a new public building from bottom to top. This blend of theory and hands-on learning prepares you for an exceptional career in civil engineering.

Key Program Highlights

  • Accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), and Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration
  • Ranked 1st in Scotland for Civil Engineering in Overall Satisfaction in the 2025 National Student Survey
  • Small class sizes with personalised support, regular feedback, and guidance from expert teaching staff with strong industry connections
  • Unique learning experiences including site visits, industrial placements, and opportunities linked to the University of Dundee's CERN collaboration

Curriculum and Modules

The BEng program covers four levels of study, progressing from foundational engineering principles to advanced specialised topics. You will study core civil engineering subjects alongside practical design projects and develop teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills throughout.

Structural Analysis and Design

20 credits

Study the behaviour of structures under various loading conditions and learn to analyse and design structural elements using established engineering principles and modern software tools.

Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering

20 credits

Explore the mechanical behaviour of soils and rocks, ground investigation techniques, and the design of foundations, retaining walls, and earthworks for civil engineering projects.

Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics

20 credits

Understand the principles of fluid behaviour, open channel flow, and pipe systems, applying these concepts to the design of water supply, drainage, and flood management infrastructure.

Construction Materials and Technology

20 credits

Examine the properties and performance of key construction materials including concrete, steel, and timber, and learn how material selection influences structural design and sustainability.

Surveying and Digital Engineering

20 credits

Develop skills in land surveying, spatial data collection, and the use of advanced digital tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) for civil engineering project planning and management.

Individual Research Project

40 credits

Undertake an independent research project in a specialised area of civil or structural engineering, demonstrating your ability to investigate, analyse, and present findings at a professional level.
