MEng Civil Engineering at the University of Exeter
The MEng Civil Engineering at the University of Exeter is an integrated Masters degree that combines undergraduate and postgraduate study into a continuous four-year programme. It is designed to equip you with first-hand industry experience and insight into your role as a civil engineer through site visits, fieldwork, and project-based learning.
In your first year, you will explore core engineering disciplines through collaborative modules, learning from experts in areas such as vibration engineering, water resource and pollution control, and construction project management. As you progress, you will develop advanced skills in structural engineering, hydraulics, and geotechnical engineering, with your final year offering specialist modules and an extended individual research project.
The programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) on behalf of the Engineering Council, fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). You will also have opportunities to gain work experience through summer placements or the optional Year in Industry variant.
Key Program Highlights
- Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
- Project-based learning with real-world, industry-driven projects throughout all four years
- GBP 6.5 million investment in teaching labs, workshop spaces, and equipment
- Collaborative first year allowing exploration of multiple core engineering disciplines
Curriculum and Modules
The MEng Civil Engineering curriculum is structured across four years, progressing from foundational multidisciplinary engineering to advanced specialist topics. Each year comprises 120 UK credits, with assessment through a combination of continuous assessment, project work, presentations, and examinations. Modules may vary depending on staff availability and research interests.
Multidisciplinary Engineering Foundations
30 creditsA collaborative first-year module building core theoretical and practical knowledge across all engineering disciplines, with a year-long multidisciplinary group project putting knowledge into practice.
Solid Mechanics and Structural Analysis
15 creditsCovers the principles of solid mechanics, stress analysis, and structural behaviour of materials, providing the analytical foundation needed for structural engineering design.
Geotechnical Engineering and Soils
15 creditsHands-on learning covering soil mechanics, ground investigation techniques, and geotechnical analysis, combining laboratory practical work with theoretical understanding.
Hydraulics and Water Engineering
15 creditsIntroduces fluid mechanics, open channel flow, and hydraulic design principles applied to water resource management and environmental engineering challenges.
Civil Engineering Design Project
30 creditsA large-scale civil engineering project typically driven by industry, providing experience in problem-solving, engineering design, team working, and project management.
Individual Research Project (MEng)
60 creditsAn extended final-year individual project where you put your research and engineering skills into practice, developing a real-world solution to an engineering problem or challenge.
