Program Overview: Applied Orthopaedic Technology BMSc

The Applied Orthopaedic Technology (Intercalated) BMSc (Hons) at the University of Dundee is the only orthopaedic-focused intercalated BMSc in the UK, taught by leading experts in orthopaedics, biomechanics, and motion analysis. This one-year program is designed for medical students who wish to take an intercalated year to deepen their understanding of orthopaedic science and technology before returning to complete their medical degree.

The program provides you with an early understanding of the principles involved in the development and application of orthopaedic technology, orthopaedic biomechanics, and sports biomechanics. Based at the TORT Centre within the Department of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, you will benefit from access to state-of-the-art motion analysis and gait laboratory facilities.

Many students have the opportunity to present their research findings at national conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals during their intercalated year. The skills and knowledge gained are particularly valuable if you are considering a career in orthopaedics, trauma surgery, or sports medicine after graduation.

Key Program Highlights

  • The only orthopaedic-focused intercalated BMSc available in the United Kingdom
  • Access to state-of-the-art gait analysis and motion analysis laboratories at the TORT Centre
  • Opportunities to present research at national conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Taught by specialists in orthopaedics, biomechanics, sports medicine, and rehabilitation

Curriculum and Modules

The curriculum is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, four groups of self-directed learning modules, and an independent research project in a relevant field of interest. The program builds from foundational biomechanical principles in the first semester to clinically applied orthopaedic topics in the second semester.

Principles of Biomechanics

An introduction to the fundamental concepts of biomechanics, covering statics, dynamics, and material properties as they relate to the musculoskeletal system and orthopaedic applications.

Orthopaedic Technology and Innovation

Explores the development, implementation, and evaluation of orthopaedic technologies including joint replacements, fixation devices, and rehabilitation equipment used in modern clinical practice.

Sports Biomechanics and Medicine

Covers the biomechanical analysis of human movement in sport, injury mechanisms, and the role of technology in sports medicine and performance assessment, featuring guest lectures from sports medicine specialists.

Research Methods and Statistics

Provides essential training in research design, data collection, statistical analysis, and academic writing skills required for conducting and interpreting medical and biomechanical research.

Clinical Orthopaedic Applications

Applies biomechanical principles to clinically relevant orthopaedic scenarios such as wheelchair design, joint replacement requirements, gait analysis, and methods of injury assessment.

Independent Research Project

A substantial independent research project conducted in a relevant field of your choice, culminating in a written dissertation and oral VIVA examination presented to a board of internal and external examiners.

Self-Directed Learning Areas

Motion Analysis and Gait Assessment Rehabilitation Engineering Orthopaedic Trauma Biomechanics Foot Pressure Analysis and Podiatric Biomechanics
