Mathematics BSc Program Overview

The Mathematics BSc at the University of Birmingham helps you develop analytical, statistical, and computational skills to formulate and tackle complex problems. You will learn to think logically, independently, and imaginatively across a broad range of mathematical disciplines, from theoretical mathematics to finance, statistics, and data science.

The program covers the breadth and depth of modern mathematics in a supportive and inclusive community. In Year 1, all students take core modules spanning pure and applied mathematics, including mathematical foundations, calculus, linear algebra, analysis, probability, statistics, differential equations, and mechanics.

As you progress into Years 2 and 3, you gain increasing freedom to specialise in areas that interest you. In your final year, you choose four optional modules across a broad spectrum of mathematical areas and complete a 40-credit independent research project under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

Key Program Highlights

  • Ranked 76th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 11th among UK universities
  • Highly customisable final year with a wide choice of specialist modules and an independent research project
