PhD in Medical Life Science and Technology at TUM

The PhD program in Medical Life Science and Technology is a structured postgraduate program within the TUM School of Medicine aimed at students with a background in medicine, engineering, or life sciences. It consists primarily of an experimental scientific project performed in the laboratory of a faculty member, complemented by interdisciplinary lectures, seminars, and practical courses.

Approximately 50 research groups from various departments actively participate in the program, covering key research areas including oncology, neuroscience, immunology and infection, biomedical imaging, cardiovascular research, and molecular medicine. The program is part of the TUM Medical Graduate Center and the TUM Graduate School, giving students access to financial support for international research activities and professional development opportunities.

The goal of the program is to provide a thorough scientific training and equip students with the tools to become successful and independent researchers. Skills gained from completing the PhD, including project management, analytical, and communication skills, prepare graduates for careers in both academia and industry.

Key Program Highlights

  • Structured three-year program with full-time laboratory research and interdisciplinary coursework across six key medical research areas
  • Access to approximately 50 research groups spanning oncology, neuroscience, immunology, biomedical imaging, cardiovascular research, and molecular medicine
  • Full membership in the TUM Graduate School with financial support for international research activities, soft skills courses, and manuscript proof-reading
  • All students receive funding through program scholarships and advisor laboratory support to focus on research full-time

Curriculum and Research Modules

The PhD program requires students to achieve a total of 180 ECTS points, of which 32 ECTS must be earned through various curricular activities, and 148 ECTS are awarded for the written dissertation and oral defence. The compulsory coursework consists of different modules combining scientific content focused on the six key disciplines with extradisciplinary training elements.

Dissertation Research Project

148 ECTS

Full-time experimental scientific research conducted in the laboratory of a faculty member, culminating in a written dissertation and oral defence covering one of the program's key research areas.

Scientific Seminars and Journal Clubs

Regular participation in research seminars and journal clubs to develop critical analysis skills, stay current with literature, and practice scientific communication within the research community.

Laboratory Rotations

Hands-on rotations in different research laboratories to broaden technical expertise and gain exposure to diverse methodologies across the program's six key research disciplines.

Interdisciplinary Lectures and Practical Courses

Structured coursework spanning molecular medicine, neuroscience, oncology, immunology, cardiovascular biology, and biomedical imaging to build a comprehensive scientific foundation.

Transferable Skills Training

Extradisciplinary seminars covering project management, scientific writing, presentation skills, and career development to prepare graduates for academic and non-academic professional environments.
