Ocean and Geophysics BSc (Hons) Program Overview
This degree focuses on the role of the oceans in the Earth system and their influence on climate past, present, and future. The first two years develop a general understanding of the Earth system and the role of the oceans within it, with particular focus on shallow seas surrounding the continents and interactions between ice and the oceans.
In the third year, you specialise by following either an Ocean Physics route, focusing on process understanding and numerical modelling, or a Geophysics route focusing on characterisation and observation of near-surface marine sedimentary environments. The course places particular emphasis on gaining skills and knowledge directly relevant to industry, especially in areas such as climate change, sea level rise, marine pollution, and marine renewable energy.
Bangor's School of Ocean Sciences is one of the largest university centres teaching marine sciences in Britain. The school's unique location near the Menai Strait and the Irish Sea, with easy access to the UNESCO-designated GeoMon geopark and Snowdonia National Park, provides outstanding opportunities for fieldwork and hands-on learning.
Key Program Highlights
- Two specialist pathways in Year 3: Ocean Physics or Geophysics, allowing you to tailor your degree to your career goals
- Hands-on fieldwork including programmes aboard the university's research ship, laboratory experiments, and geophysical residential field trips
- Strong industry links with the National Oceanography Centre, Met Office, and the offshore, hydrocarbon, and marine renewables industries
- Optional placement year available to gain professional experience with relevant organisations in the UK or overseas
Curriculum and Modules
The Ocean and Geophysics BSc (Hons) curriculum is structured across three years, building from foundational Earth system science to advanced specialisation. You will develop generic skills such as self-learning, time management, and numerical problem solving, alongside subject-specific competencies in oceanographic observation and computer modelling. Module listings are indicative and may be subject to change; contact Uni4Edu for the most current module information.
Provides a foundational understanding of ocean circulation, waves, tides, and the physical processes governing the marine environment. Introduces key observational and analytical methods used in oceanographic research.
Explores the interconnected systems of the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, and lithosphere. Develops an understanding of how these components interact to shape the global climate and environment.
Covers the principles of geophysical surveying including seismic, electrical, electromagnetic, and magnetic techniques. Emphasises practical skills using industry-standard software and hardware for sub-surface imaging.
Introduces numerical modelling techniques for simulating ocean processes. Students learn to build, run, and interpret computer models relevant to climate prediction and oceanographic research.
Examines the formation, transport, and deposition of sediments in marine and coastal settings. Focuses on understanding sedimentary processes relevant to geophysical interpretation and offshore industry applications.
