The MSc Forestry (Distance Learning) at Bangor University equips you with the theoretical, analytical, digital, interpersonal, and self-management skills required for a successful career in forestry and related professions. This program is fully accredited by the Institute of Chartered Foresters and gives partial fulfilment of Professional Membership Entry. A combination of the MSc Forestry qualification and professional experience will enable you to apply to become a fully Chartered Forester and use the prestigious post-nominal MICFor.

The distance learning format uses a blended approach where lectures taught on campus are live-streamed for remote students. Teaching and learning for each module is supported by guided reading handbooks plus various learning materials hosted on a virtual learning environment, including online lectures, seminars, e-books, journal articles, and discussion forums.

Curriculum and Modules

The program comprises a taught component of 120 credits consisting of 15-credit modules, plus a 60-credit dissertation. Students can specialise in one of two distinct degree streams: Ecology and Management (for those with a stronger interest in ecology and science) or Trees, Forests and People (for those interested in the interrelationships between forests and society). Applicants not wishing to study for the full MSc can take exit awards of either Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) or Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits).

Silviculture

15 credits

Covers the principles and practice of silviculture including the establishment, tending, and regeneration of forests and woodlands for a range of objectives.

Forest Inventory, Assessment and Monitoring

15 credits

Develops skills in forest measurement, inventory design, data collection, and the monitoring of forest resources for informed management decisions.

Forest Management Planning

15 credits

Explores the process of developing comprehensive forest management plans, integrating ecological, economic, and social objectives.

Forest Ecology

15 credits

Examines the ecological processes that underpin forest ecosystems, including biodiversity, nutrient cycling, and the effects of climate change on forests.

Forest History, Policy and Management

Analyses the historical development of forestry policy and practice, and the interrelationships between government, industry, and communities in forest management.

MSc Dissertation

60 credits

An independent research project led by the student who works closely with an academic supervisor to produce high-quality postgraduate-level research on a forestry topic of their choice.
