Curriculum and Modules

The taught component of this degree comprises 120 credits of 15-credit modules, which may include both coursework and examinations. The dissertation component (60 credits) is an independent research project supervised by an academic, running from June to September. Part 1 runs from September to May and consists of four taught modules, a study tour, and a research planning module component.

Forest Ecosystems and Ecology

Explores the structure and function of forest ecosystems, including tree biology, forest ecology, and the interactions between biotic and abiotic components of forest environments.

Sustainable Forest Management

15 credits

Examines principles and practices of managing forests sustainably, covering silviculture, forest planning, and the balance between economic productivity and environmental conservation.

Forests and Climate Change

15 credits

Investigates the role of forests in the global carbon cycle, climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, and the impacts of a changing climate on forest ecosystems worldwide.

Forest Policy and Governance

15 credits

Analyses national and international forest policy frameworks, governance structures, and the socio-economic dimensions of forest resource management and conservation.

Research Methods and Study Tour

15 credits

Provides training in research design, data collection and analysis, and includes a week-long study tour where students engage with forestry professionals on management and policy issues.

MSc Dissertation

60 credits

An independent research project on a topic selected in consultation with your academic supervisor. Dissertations can have a temperate or tropical focus and may include fieldwork locally, elsewhere in the UK, or overseas.
