Program Overview: BS in Bioengineering at Northeastern University

The Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering at Northeastern University provides students with a broad understanding of the quantitative analysis of biological systems combined with deep expertise in an engineering area of their choice. Housed within the College of Engineering on the Boston campus, this interdisciplinary program integrates engineering principles with biological sciences to develop technologies and solutions for healthcare and medical applications.

Students build a common base of knowledge that includes fundamental science and mathematics, instrumentation and imaging skills, quantitative physiology, and biomechanics. In advanced courses, students learn to design and analyze biomolecular systems, understand the dynamical behavior of bioelectrical networks, and process biological materials from multiple disciplinary perspectives.

Northeastern's signature cooperative education (co-op) program is a fundamental component of the degree, offering students six-month professional work experiences integrated into their studies. Both a five-year, three-co-op and a four-year, two-co-op option are available, allowing students to gain substantial real-world experience before graduation.

Key Program Highlights

  • Four bioengineering concentrations: Bioimaging and Signal Processing, Cell and Tissue Engineering, Biomechanics, and Biomedical Devices
  • Integrated cooperative education (co-op) with leading biotech and medical device companies such as Moderna and Medtronic
  • Two-semester senior capstone design project tackling real-world engineering challenges
  • PlusOne Accelerated Master's pathway enabling students to earn both BS and MS degrees in an accelerated timeframe

Curriculum & Modules

The bioengineering curriculum provides a rigorous foundation in mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering science, with laboratory experiences and an emphasis on design within a biological context. Students progress from core engineering fundamentals to specialized concentration coursework, culminating in a capstone design project.

Biomechanics

4 Credit Hours

Covers concepts of stress, strain, and constitutive laws applied to biomechanics problems, introducing rigid body and deformable body mechanics with illustrative examples from tissue and cell biomechanics.

Bioelectricity

4 Credit Hours

Discusses principles of electrical circuit theory and analysis methods for understanding and designing biomedical devices and biological sensors.

Molecular Bioengineering

4 Credit Hours

Introduces the fundamentals of molecular structure and function underpinning engineering of biological macromolecules, with application of design concepts for therapeutic molecules.

Experimental Systems and Synthetic Bioengineering

4 Credit Hours

Introduces experimental aspects of systems and synthetic bioengineering, including quantitative experiments, genetic and enzymatic circuit design, and ethical considerations in bioengineering research.

Modeling and Inference in Bioengineering

4 Credit Hours

Develops statistical tools to address inverse problems, teaching students to interpret complex and partial information from biological systems using indirect noisy measurements.

Capstone Design Project

8 Credit Hours

A two-semester senior capstone where students apply their knowledge and experience to a real-world design problem, developing feasible bioengineering solutions from concept through prototype.
