Program Overview: MA Global East Asia
The MA Global East Asia (MAGEA) at Freie Universität Berlin provides students with core knowledge and diverse methodologies for exploring topics of global East Asia in its historical and contemporary development. With its multidimensional and interdisciplinary approach, the program addresses local, national, regional, and global contexts in and around East Asia.
As a consecutive master's program, MAGEA brings together students with expertise in one single East Asian country or with broader regional expertise on East Asia. You will acquire methodological, interdisciplinary, and linguistic competencies for engaging with your chosen focus country — China, Japan, or Korea — and the entire region's global entanglements.
Housed within the Department of History and Cultural Studies, the program offers a genuine area studies profile with a unique breadth of subjects related to East Asia. Students gain access to an extensive academic and professional network and connect with internationally acclaimed scholars from three participating disciplines.

Curriculum and Module Structure
The MAGEA program covers three main parts consisting of several modules, each comprising one or two seminars. The Integrative Area Global East Asia is compulsory for all students, while the Consolidation and Complementary areas allow for specialization and interdisciplinary exploration. The program concludes with a master's thesis.
Integrative Area: Global East Asia I
10 ECTSCompulsory introductory module providing foundational interdisciplinary frameworks for understanding East Asia as a unified region and its global connections. Students explore structural features that constitute East Asia as a space and the political, economic, and cultural dynamics shaping the region.
Integrative Area: Global East Asia II
10 ECTSAdvanced compulsory module building on the first integrative module, deepening comparative and transnational perspectives on East Asia. Students engage with complex interdisciplinary issues and reflect on them from a comparative perspective.
Consolidation: Chinese Studies
10 ECTSSpecialization module focusing on China's historical development, politics, economy, society, and culture. Students examine China's role within the broader East Asian region and its global significance.
Consolidation: Japanese Studies
10 ECTSSpecialization module covering Japan through its language, history, culture, politics, economy, and society. Topics are approached from social science or cultural and literary studies perspectives.
Consolidation: Korean Studies
10 ECTSSpecialization module exploring Korea's historical and contemporary development, including political, social, and cultural dimensions. Students analyze Korea's position within East Asian regional dynamics.
Master's Thesis
30 ECTSThe culminating research project in which students independently develop and investigate a scholarly question related to Global East Asia. The thesis demonstrates advanced methodological competence and original academic contribution.

Admission Requirements
